Celebrate summer with the UB Art Galleries at the galleries’ second annual Summer Extravaganza.
The family-friendly event, which coincides with the Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk, will take place from noon to 4 p.m. July 14 inside and outside the UB Anderson Gallery, located at 1 Martha Jackson Place, off Englewood Avenue near the South Campus.
Designed for visitors of all ages from UB, the University Heights neighborhood and the larger Buffalo community, Summer Extravaganza will feature art workshops, including painting and sculpture making, as well as yoga, live music by The Progressions, and the Loose Cannon and Green Acres Ice Cream food trucks.
Curator tours will be given throughout the day of the three exhibitions currently on view through July 29: “BRACHA: Pietà-Eurydice-Medusa,” “Claire Falkenstein: Time Elements” and “Classroom Conversations: Collaborative Learning from the Cravens Collection.”
“Classroom Conversations” highlights the work of second- and third-graders from Highgate Heights Elementary who worked with UB students taking the Museum Management course and objects from UB’s Cravens Collection, a 1,100-piece collection of archaeological and ethnographic objects amassed by UB alumna Annette Cravens during four decades of travel to Asia, Africa, South America and Europe.
Visitors also can view “Cravens World: The Human Aesthetic,” a selection of items from the Cravens Collection that is on permanent display in the Anderson Gallery.
Summer Extravaganza also will feature the release of a new project: The Cravens Collection Coloring Book. The free coloring book includes original drawings by Buffalo-based artists — among them UB faculty and staff — showcasing the unique objects in UB’s Cravens Collection.
Artists include David Schirm, Joan Linder, Cassandra Ott, Pam Glick, NC Miller, MJ Myers, Andie Jairam, Robert Harris, Mark Synder, Marissa Bannister, Adam Weekly, Bruce Adams, Kyle Butler, Rebecca Wing, Sarah Meyers, Mizin Shin, Bob Fleming, Teri Katz Kasimov, Caitlin Cass, Tricia Butski, Patrick Foran, Marc Tomko, Shasti Soudant-O'Leary, Robert Scalise and Rachel Shelton.
Visitors also can pick up a map for the Capen Garden Walk at the gallery.
