Graduate Admissions Timeline

Thinking about graduate school? We’ve outlined some key steps to take as you prepare your application to UB’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Please note: These are recommendations, and are flexible contingent upon application deadlines, your career path and when you personally begin the application process.

January–March (9–12 Months Out)

April–June (6–8 Months Out)

  • Research current faculty to ensure your interests are a good fit with the department or program.
  • Plan campus visits and schedule phone calls with departmental staff to answer specific questions. Follow-up with faculty about curricular, mentor, and academic information.
  • Begin test preparation for the GRE, MAT, or other subject tests. Find out if your current school has any free testing preparation, or where the nearest testing center is and how often tests are administered. If you are in the Buffalo area, UB’s Career Services Office is a registered testing center.
  • Speak or follow up with current students and/or alumni. Utilize the University at Buffalo Alumni Network to ask recent program graduates your questions.

July–September (3–5 Months Out)

  • Review specific application requirements.
  • Formulate a list of individuals who could write letters of recommendation and send them a polite request. Services such as Interfolio can help you stay organized.
  • Learn about the University at Buffalo’s financial aid process.
  • Check your program or department’s website for information on application deadlines for funding.
  • Register for and take standardized tests. (Some students choose to take a test twice, so be sure to leave room in your schedule for this option.)

October–January (3 Months Out–Application Deadline)

  • Visit UB or attend graduate recruitment events to speak directly with the people who may assist in selecting successful applicants.
  • Complete your personal statement, essay, and/or writing sample, then visit a career services office or writing center for a professional review. If this option isn't available, ask a peer to read and provide feedback.
  • Make a list of all pertinent documents for your application, including any additional forms for funding through a department.
  • Create an application submission schedule to ensure that all documents are submitted on time.
  • Apply!
