Admissions

We welcome your application to our department and hope you can join our community of scholars!

Incoming freshman or undergraduate transfer applicants who are interested in pursuing geoloigcal sciences study must first apply and be accepted to the University at Buffalo. All relevant information, including admissions criteria, the online application, dates and deadlines, and standardized test score requirements, can be found by visiting UB Undergraduate Admissions.

Current undergraduate students who are interested in majoring (Bachelor of Sciences or Bachelor of Arts) or minoring in geological sciences must complete and submit the Apply to Major Form.

Acceptance Criteria

  • BS in Geology
    Applications should be made after completion of the first introductory course: GLY 101 Natural Hazards or GLY 102 Climate Change. A grade of C or better in that course and an overall average of at least 2.0 is required.
  • BA in Geology
    Applications should be made after completion of the first introductory course: GLY 101 Natural Hazards or GLY 102 Climate Change. A grade of C or better in that course and an overall average of at least 2.0 is required.
  • Combined BA/MA in Geology
    Minimum GPA of 3.0 in all courses required for the major, completion of the prerequisite courses, and two letters of recommendation from faculty members.
  • Minor in Geology
    Applications should be made after completion of the first introductory course: GLY 101 Natural Hazards or GLY 102 Climate Change. A grade of C or better in that course and an overall average of at least 2.0 is required.
