Global Gender Studies program becomes independent Department of Global Gender and Sexuality Studies

After a unanimous vote by the Faculty Senate, UB reinstated the Department of Global Gender and Sexuality Studies' independent status on Feb. 20, 2018.

President Satish K. Tripathi approved the creation of the department, effective immediately.

Originally established as a result of student activism in the 1960s, UB’s first Department of Women's Studies was one of the first in the nation. Founders and former chairs of the program include Elizabeth Lapvosky Kennedy, Isabel Marcus, Barbara Wejnert, Alexis de Veaux, Margarita Vargas and Barbara Bono. Gwynn Thomas is the current chair.

Becoming a standalone Department of Global Gender and Sexuality Studies will provide more academic opportunities for students interested in women and gender studies, sexuality studies and feminism.
