BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Jerome J. Schentag, Pharm.D., professor of pharmaceutics at the University at Buffalo, will receive the Stimulation of Research Award from the American Pharmaceutical Association at the association's annual meeting next month.

The award recognizes and encourages outstanding meritorious achievement in stimulating others to engage and excel in pharmaceutical research.

Schentag, a member of the UB faculty since 1976, is the director of the UB Center for Clinical Pharmacy Research and the doctoral program in pharmacy. He also directs the Clinical Pharmacokinetics Laboratory at Millard Fillmore Hospital-Gates Circle.

He co-invented the "Smart Pill," a drug-delivery system designed to carry a medical payload to a specific site in the gastrointestinal tract. The ingestible, electronically controlled capsule has the potential for improving the treatment of patients who require repeated delivery of a drug, such as insulin, to a small area of the intestine where it can be absorbed.

It was patented in the U.S. in January 1994.

Schentag serves on the editorial boards of the journals Pharmacotherapy, Pharmaceutical Research and Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, among others. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 articles published in scholarly journals.

He is a member of numerous scientific groups, including the New York Academy of Sciences, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.

He received a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a doctorate in clinical pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science.

He lives in Eggertsville.
