UB to Host Technical Theater Workshops for High School Students Aug. 16-18

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Center for the Arts at the University at Buffalo will hold Explore the Arts, its first technical theater workshops for high school and college students, as well as adults, from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 16-18 in the Center for the Arts. Registration and fee are required.

Explore the Arts Technical Theater Workshops are for high school students who have an interest in the technical aspects of theatrical arts. The program is designed to introduce and expand participants' knowledge and interest in the technical aspects of theatrical arts and enhance creativity and personal expression, while providing a foundation for growth and development.

Three three-hour morning workshop sessions will include instruction by UB professional staff and faculty. Instruction will be at an introductory level.

The workshops will include:

-- Introduction to Technical Theater. $25. 9 a.m. to noon, Aug. 16. Students will be introduced to basic sound, lighting, and staging concepts and terms. Students also will learn what equipment is utilized and how it is put into practice. This course is recommended, but not required, if students do not have previous theatrical instruction.

-- Technical Theater Sound. $45. 9 a.m. to noon, Aug. 17. Students will be exposed to basic sound principles and design, live sound equipment, signal distribution, mixing techniques and troubleshooting.

-- Technical Theater Lighting. $45. 9 a.m. to noon, Aug. 18. Students will receive instruction on basic lighting principles and design, instruments, hanging and focusing, and troubleshooting. See how lighting is used to evoke emotion and create the performance environment.

A $15 non-refundable registration fee is required at time of registration. Workshops are individually priced. Balance of workshop fee must be paid by Aug. 6. Participants can register for all three workshops at a discounted rate of $100. Fee includes instruction and materials. Deadline for registration is Aug. 6.
