Pharmacy Student Wins Scholarship from National Society of Collegiate Scholars

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Jovin Panthapattu, a sophomore in the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and a new member of the UB chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), has received the society's Merit Award Scholarship, which carries a $1,000 cash grant.

Panthapattu, a native of Kerala, India, attended Clarkstown High School North in New City before coming to UB.

The NSCS is an honors organization for high-achieving freshmen and sophomores at more than 270 universities nationwide. This year it awarded 52 scholarships to outstanding new members out of hundreds of applicants. Winners were selected based on essays, extracurricular activities, recommendation letter and commitment to the NSCS mission statement and ideals.

In addition to the $50,000 awarded to new members through the Merit Award scholarships, NSCS also awards scholarships for textbooks, study abroad programs and graduate school, as well as community service grants and other merit-based awards.

NSCS is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is the nation's only interdisciplinary honors organization to invite first- and second-year college students. Membership is by invitation only, based on grade point average and class standing. NSCS has more than 750,000 members and more than 270 chapters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
