Media Advisory: SUNY Chancellor, State Education Commissioner to discuss TeachNY at UB

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo will host a public discussion Tuesday, led by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher and State Education Department Commissioner Mary Ellen Elia, on TeachNY, a new statewide effort to address the teacher shortage and improve professional development for practicing educators.

When: 1-4 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 9.

For Media: There will be a 30-minute media availability at 1:30 p.m. with Zimpher and Elia, as well as Jaekyung Lee, dean of the UB Graduate School of Education, and Christine Giver, dean of the College of Education at SUNY Fredonia.

Where: The Grand Auditorium on the fourth floor of the newly refurbished and renovated Hayes Hall on UB’s South Campus. Parking is available in the nearby Townsend Hall lot.

What: Zimpher’s UB’s visit is the latest stop in her statewide “listening tour” that has included three other SUNY schools with schools of education. The agenda for the forum includes meetings with UB doctoral students in education.

Issues at Hand: TeachNY is a movement to lift up the teaching profession and improve teacher preparation. The public discussion will focus on the teaching profession, support of educator preparation and expansion of professional development that spans the careers of educators.
