New York's Bessie Award-winning Dorrance Dance honors tap dance’s uniquely beautiful history in a new and dynamically compelling context. Street, club and experimental dance forms awake to the sound of furious rhythms. It is a unique combination of tap and modern dance. "Ms. Dorrance, a brilliant conductor, pushes the boundaries of tap while exposing its true nature: that it is music" (The New York Times).
Founder and artistic director Michelle Dorrance is one of the most sought after tap dancers of her generation and "one of the most imaginative tap choreographers working today" (The New Yorker). A 2015 MacArthur Fellow, 2014 Alpert Award Winner, and 2013 Jacob's Pillow Dance Award Winner, Michelle performs, teaches and choreographs throughout the world.
Dorrance Dance is passionate about continuing tap education to the next generation. The company will be in residence March 27-31, teaching master classes to UB dance majors and the community.
One of the dancers performing is Ali Dietz. She grew up dancing under the direction of her mother at Mary Alice’s Dance Studio in Buffalo, NY. She has been working with Dorrance Dance since 2013. Ali has performed at Spoleto Festival USA and at City Center in the Fall for Dance Festival. She frequently teaches at Broadway Dance Center in New York City, as well as teaching workshops and setting works throughout New Jersey and New York. Before working with the company, in 2008, Ali founded Dancers Give Back. Over the years, the organization has raised a half of a million dollars towards cancer research and patient support.
