BUFFALO, N.Y. -- George John Lopos, Ph.D., has been appointed dean of Millard Fillmore College and summer sessions at the University at Buffalo by Muriel A. Moore, Ph.D., vice president for public service and urban affairs.

Lopos previously was associate dean of continuing education at the University of Iowa, where he also has served as director of conferences and institutes and as an adjunct assistant professor of English.

Moore said Lopos, who brings considerable expertise and a wealth of experience to UB, will contribute immensely to the already rich history of Millard Fillmore College.

"Dr. Lopos comes to us at a most propitious time, as the Western New York region is in the midst of changing from an industrial, manufacturing base to a service-oriented industry," she noted.

"His leadership in the field of continuing education and expertise in distance learning will be channeled toward establishing a broad array of programs to train citizens of our community for the marketplace of the 21st century."

Moore added: "I am confident he will enhance both the vision of Millard Fillmore College and the university's relationship with the Western New York community."

A graduate of Colgate University, Lopos earned his master's degree from Syracuse University and a doctorate from the University of Iowa.

He has held numerous positions with the National University Continuing Education Association (NUCEA), including chair of the Council on Educational Delivery Systems, the board of directors and the executive committee.

Creator and host of "Conferences at Iowa" for Iowa Radio Forum, Lopos was a consultant for non-credit programs at the University of Northern Iowa, the Kansas Association for Post-Secondary Educational Television and M.D.M. Associates.

Lopos said he hopes to continue Millard Fillmore College's long history of service to the community and the university.

"With support from UB's academic departments and administration, Millard Fillmore College will address the future with expanded educational and service options for the various publics served by UB," he added.

Such options, he said, include distance-learning technology, innovative meeting formats, flexible scheduling and non-traditional educational partnerships with the community.

Lopos lives in Amherst.
