UB Offers Free Lectures at Center of Excellence

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Three free public lectures in the UBThisSummer Lecture Series will be held at the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, Virginia and Ellicott streets. The lectures, part of the center's grand opening, will be held June 19, 20 and 21 at 4 p.m.

On June 19, "Toward Clinical Genomics: An Array of Possibilities" will be the topic of Norma J. Nowak, director of science and technology for the center. Nowak, director of the DNA Microarray and Genomics Facility at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and UB associate professor of biochemistry, will discuss emerging technologies, made possible by the sequencing of the human genome, that have the potential to create dramatic improvements in patient care.

Ashwani Rajput, attending surgeon at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and UB assistant professor of surgery, will discuss "Colorectal Cancer Therapies: Is the Future Really Now?" on June 20. Rajput will focus on efforts to find molecular targets in the treatment of solid tumors and potential combination therapies to increase the success rates in patients with advanced diseases, including colorectal cancer.

"Accelerating Economic Development in the Buffalo-Niagara Region by Transferring UB Inventions to Society" will be the topic of Robert J. Genco on June 21. UB vice provost and director of the university's Office of Science, Technology Transfer and Economic Outreach, Genco will address the impact of a strong university research base on regional economic growth.
