April 2023: Arufa Hossain

Do you recognize the building in the background of this photo of Arufa Hossain, our April Spotlight Student?  Yes, that’s the U.S. Capitol Building!  Arufa, a UB Criminology major, is currently serving as an LGBTQ+ Victory Institute Congressional Intern in Washington, D.C., where she works in Congressman Adam Schiff's office at the House of Representatives.

Arufa writes that she is “passionate about helping marginalized minority group youth and families in impoverished, under-represented, under-resourced communities,” especially since she herself is a first-generation student and daughter of low-income Bangladeshi-Muslim immigrants.

After graduating this spring, Arufa will put her passion and sociological skills to good use, doing a fellowship in New York City that involves working with students and families in a public school setting.

Congratulations, Arufa, and best wishes after graduation!
