Global Modernisms

Picasso and Braque weren’t the only artists practicing Cubism. Like other modernist styles, Cubism left France, traveled the globe and found expression within very different contexts. This course takes a comparative look at how modernist aesthetic practices were taken up by artists living outside of Europe and North America. It considers how modern art reflected struggles for self-determination, representation, and social change in regions dealing with the impact of colonialism, from Asia to Africa to Latin America.
