Now Hiring: Assistant Professor in Design

The Department of Art at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Design. We seek candidates who engage in interdisciplinary and experimental approaches to design research, practice and pedagogy and are able to move between analog and digital environments.

Position Summary

Situated in an innovative and experimental art and design program, the design and emerging practices concentration area encourages cross-discipline inquiry to communicate solutions and experiences for a broad range of contexts and audiences. The ideal candidate will demonstrate professional knowledge of the field and an understanding of design history, methodology, and critical issues in addition to a clear research agenda in their design practice. An advanced level of expertise in one or more of the following areas is desired: print design and digital publishing, information design, interaction design, sustainability and social design in addition to experience in typography and other forms of visual rhetoric.

The department has recently launched PLATFORM, a new socially engaged design lab. Candidates with an interest in community engagement and collaboration are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA in Graphic Design, New Media Design, or equivalent
  • Ability to teach foundational principles and formal methodologies as well as special topic upper level classes at both the undergraduate and graduate level
  • Artistic or professional recognition in the design field
  • Potential for national and international profile
