As the New York State SPEAK OUT!® Therapy & Research Center, the University at Buffalo Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Clinic offers the SPEAK OUT!® speech and voice therapy program at no cost to help people with Parkinson’s disease regain and retain effective communication.
SPEAK OUT!® emphasizes speaking with intent to convert speech from an automatic function to an intentional act. Participation in SPEAK OUT!®, along with daily home practice and regular re-evaluations, have been shown to help patients regain and retain their communication skills throughout the progression of Parkinson’s.
This free SPEAK OUT!® program can be provided to anyone in New York State either in-person or via teletherapy and consists of individual and group therapy. Individual therapy is typically scheduled 2 times per week for 4 weeks with a check-up after 4 weeks. The SPEAK OUT!® group is offered throughout the week for individuals to attend weekly in addition to their daily home practice. Our current research is comparing outcomes between in-person therapy and teletherapy.
Currently, we are pleased to offer The SPEAK OUT!® group multiple times per week with both virtual and in-person sessions to better serve our Parkinson's community. We also offer a weekly support group.
