Clinic Training

The University at Buffalo Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic offers a diverse clinical experience for graduate students in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences (CDS). It is a graduate training facility accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA). The clinic provides a variety of services to those with speech, language, and hearing needs aging from infancy to adulthood. The speech-language clinic is particularly noted for specialty programs in the following areas:

The Audiology clinic also provides a variety of services including: hearing testing, central auditory processing evaluation, auditory brain-stem response (ABR) testing, oto-acoustic emissions testing, tinnitus retraining, aural rehabilitation, hearing aid fitting, and posturography.

Student participation and observation

Graduate students pursuing their Master of Arts degree in Speech-Language Pathology, Doctorate of Audiology, or PhD are fully involved in the diagnosis and treatment of speech, language, and hearing disorders and provide services under the close supervision of clinical faculty in accordance with ASHA certification, CAA standards, and New York State licensure requirements. Student training requires periodic observation of a variety of diagnostic and therapy sessions. Students are aware of the ethical responsibilities of preserving confidentiality of patient information.

Students will find many resources in UB's clinic that are designed to meet their educational needs. There are student work areas that are well-stocked with the latest tests and teaching materials. A computer laboratory offers students ready access to computers to aid them in doing clinic reports and transcribing and coding video and audio tapes. The diagnostic and treatment rooms have video cameras and observation rooms next to them, so that students can observe their classmates and their supervisors as they carry out their clinical activities and review videos of their clinical work. Supervisors maintain a careful balance between providing students with guidance and freedom as students develop their diagnostic, treatment, and counseling skills. The ultimate goal is to encourage clinical independence of the developing speech-language pathologist or audiologist.

The clinic is fortunate to have highly-trained licensed and certified supervisors with many specialty areas in both speech-language pathology and audiology. In addition, the clinic, has strong ties to the academic faculty. Clinic faculty members participate in teaching selected courses and also work with the academic faculty to create a link between the CDS course work and clinical application of the theories, techniques, and philosophies taught in class. A further asset to the clinic is the access to the expertise of nationally recognized academic faculty members. Faculty members known for their research and development in the field regularly consult with the clinic regarding cases in the area of their expertise. Several academic faculty members join the clinic faculty in supervision of students.

CDS research laboratories may work in conjunction with the clinic to provide specialized services.

The clinic provides a variety of experiences on-site, enhances the clinical program through collaborative work with our department’s research laboratories, and further diversifies the program by having strong relationships with outside agencies in the community. The clinic works closely with preschool agencies, other clinics, school systems, hospitals, and nursing homes to provide a well rounded clinical rotation for graduate students.

For students on Academic or Clinic Probation
