Guardian Scholars Fund

Through the generosity of donors, the College of Arts and Sciences and Cora P. Maloney College have established a program to provide financial assistance to support the academic goals of eligible full- and part-time students who are currently or were previously in foster care. University faculty and staff are encouraged to recommend students whom they believe would qualify.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have been a ward/dependent of the court/foster care anytime on or after their 13th birthday.
  • Applicants must be a US citizen or qualified non-citizen.
  • Applicants must be considered “independent” under federal financial aid guidelines.
  • Applicants must have been in foster care or orphaned while living in the United States.

Application Procedure

Applications for assistance are submitted to the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office. All information will be kept confidential. Before beginning the application form below, please gather the following documents:

  1. 250-word typed narrative of your background and time at UB. 
  2. 250-word typed narrative of your current financial situation.
  3. 250-word typed narrative of your future plans.
  4. A copy of your up-to-date, fully expanded Academic Advising Report.
  5. A letter of recommendation from a UB faculty member. Please ask the recommender to submit their letter to stbeatty@buffalo.edu by the submission deadline with the subject heading "Recommendation for [your name]."

Submission Deadline: October 6

Recipients are expected to write a thank you letter to the donor.
