On May 8, 2019, the UB Center for Disability Studies hosted several scholars to campus for a symposium exploring issues of madness, violence, and technologies of care. Participants presented their research on a variety of topics, including everything from using comic book creation as a therapy for trauma, to bibliotherapy (or the use of reading and books as a form of therapy) to personal experiences with madness and institutionalization. The symposium featured talks by Jesse Miller, Lisa Diedrich, Martin Summers, Lisa Johnson, Susan Cahn, Jessica Lowell Mason, Kathleen Brown, Michael Rembis, and Wendy Gonaver.

Generous funding for this symposium came from the Disability Studies Research Workshop, the Humanties Institute, the Gender Institute, the Department of History, Department of English, the Department of Global Gender Studies, the Science Studies Workshop, DEAN of WNY, and the UB Vice Provost of Inclusive Excellence.
