Academics

  • Summer Courses: Following the message sent by the Provost last week and in an effort to be proactive, faculty should prepare the first summer session (May-July) to be delivered remotely. It would be wise to prepare for the same for the second session (June-August) as well. UB will decide delivery of instruction by April 9 for the first session one and early May for the second session.
  • Faculty can contact, Jay Stockslader, director of online education in the College for assistance in developing courses for online delivery.

Research

  • Non-essential research and scholarship that requires the in person use of on-campus facilities shall go into hibernation mode. Essential research is defined below as research that, if halted or put in hibernation mode, could result in:
    • Endangerment to human subjects or pose unreasonable risk to human subjects (consistent with the Guidance on Human Subjects Research circulated earlier this week.
    • Endangerment to animal subjects or pose unreasonable risk to animal subjects;
    • Loss of experiments or data that will be impossible to replicate; and/or
    • Loss of instrumentation, infrastructure, and/or an unsafe/unsecured laboratory environment or other catastrophic loss.
    • Read more on UB’s research and economic development site.

Technology

  • UB Wi-Fi: Access is now expanded to the Furnas, Parker and Greiner parking lots for students and employees with inadequate internet connections at home.
  • Zoom Security Updates: There are settings to prevent an uninvited guest from interrupting your video meeting. Learn more.
  • Helpful tips to users of Administrative HUB and SIRI: If you are authorized to use Administrative HUB and SIRI, each system requires you to use a different VPN.
    • Administrative HUB: "2Step AdminVPN-Off Campus" using the Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client
      • SIRI: Fortinet VPN Client OR "UBVPN" using the Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client
      • If you are logged onto HUB and need to use SIRI, you must LOGOFF HUB and DISCONNECT from the Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client.  To logon to SIRI, launch the FortinetVPN client.
      • The reverse is true if you are logged onto SIRI, and need to use Administrative HUB.
      • For prompt response to technical support, questions, consults, or equipment purchases, always submit a CASet work order.
  • CASet is providing updates and information regularly as things evolve. Be sure to visit the CAS COVID-19 site for details. If you need assistance, submit a CASet work order

Campus and Facilities Updates

  • Summer Study Abroad: UB and SUNY have cancelled all summer 2020 study abroad programs.
  • Consider helping CAS students in need by giving to the CAS Student Emergency Fund
  • Facilities update on classrooms: the College is working with university facilities to consolidate faculty use of classrooms for recordings so that unused classrooms can be locked and used classrooms can be regularly cleaned. The following classrooms will remain available:
    • Diefendorf 02, 147, Farber 144, 150 (these may be placed offline for construction), Knox 04, 109, 14, O’Brian 25, Pharmacy 125, 190
    • The remaining centrally scheduled classrooms will be locked. If faculty did not reserve a room for recording, requests may be submitted to the UB Space Request System for the available rooms. Please note, the requests must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Forward your questions or concerns to Caprice Arabia, assistant registrar for scheduling and enrollment at capricea@buffalo.edu.
  • Facilities Construction: Governor Cuomo announced that all non-essential construction projects are to be suspended. For this reason, UB University Facilities will temporarily shut down all work on campus facilities renovation projects in the construction phase. Design work continues on rehab projects currently in the design phase. View the full announcement here. Renovations for fall 2020 CAS hires will be our top priority as soon as Facilities begins working again.
