A map of Cameroon with markers on it indicating the languages spoken around the country.

Project by Jeff Good

This project addresses the shortcomings of current approaches to the study of language and space through collaborative research among linguists, geographers, and computer scientists. It has three goals: (i) to develop research protocols that ensure that data collected for linguistic investigation, in particular sociolinguistic data, can be effectively used for socio-spatial investigation, (ii) to collect data on language use in a linguistically diverse region of Cameroon characterized by extensive individual multilingualism, and (iii) to build a socio-spatial network of language use in this region in order to explore hypotheses on the relationship between individual-level language use and knowledge and socio-spatial relations.
