PhD Students Awarded Research Community Grant

Two Sociology PhD students were awarded a Graduate Student Research Community Grant from UB's Office of International Education!

Surabhi Pant's award is to establish the International Critical Ecology Lab, an interdisciplinary team of eight graduate students from across the Departments of Sociology, Geography, and Anthropology focused on researching global ecological issues from critical perspectives. The group aims to hold research workshops, reading groups and an invited speaker series for the coming 2022-2023 academic year. Assistant Professor Jordan Besek will serve as the faculty advisor.

Shiyue Cui's award focuses on the global theme of International Migration and Immigrant Integration. It combines talk series, workshops, and reading groups that connect UB graduate students with immigrants and refugees living in local communities. The project will facilitate a greater understanding of international migration by helping graduate students engage in local communities. It will also foster interdisciplinary collaboration and contribute to UB’s collective research agenda on International Migration, which will lead to genuine benefit, even transformation for the UB community and the world beyond. Professor Robert Adelman will serve as the faculty advisor.
