  • New Faculty Member Joins Sociology!

    We are excited to welcome Lourdes Vera as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Department of Environment and Sustainability at UB for Spring 2022! She will continue as Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2022. As an environmental sociologist and civic scientist, she works with communities living near oil and gas development to monitor their air for contaminants. Welcome, Lourdes!

    We are excited to welcome Dr. Ilya Slavinski to UB Sociology as a clinical assistant professor. He received his PhD from the University of Texas in 2021 and specializes in crime and criminal justice.

  • Dr. Hanna Grol-Prokopczyk Wins Major NIH Grant

    UB sociologist Dr. Hanna Grol-Prokopczyk has received a $1.05 million grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), a division of the National Institutes of Health, to develop a comprehensive research program in the demography of chronic pain. The program will use data from the U.S. and peer countries to investigate population-level patterns and trends in chronic pain; examine links between pain, disablement and mortality; and identify individual-level and contextual factors that shape the burden of pain and social disparities in pain.   • New Criminology Master's Program

    UB Sociology will begin offering an MS in Criminology starting Fall 2021! The MS in Criminology focuses on the nature and causes of crime, characteristics and behaviors of people who commit crime and who are affected by crime, how law enforcement agencies and criminal justice systems work, how society reacts to crime, victims, and people who commit crime, and connections between crime and other social institutions (such as work, schools, media, etc.). The Criminology MS is ideal for beginning and advanced learners who plan to (or already) work in settings that require a strong background in crime or law, with associated skills in analyzing and interpreting data relevant to that discourse, including careers in policy analysis, nonprofit or social service organizations, and public safety.
