Meet the Department of Classics

three classics students digging to find artifacts.

Classics is centered around the study of ancient Mediterranean civilizations. With a long-held reputation for innovative research and superior instruction, the Department of Classics carries particular strength in the areas of Roman culture, Greek history, archaeology and digital classics.

Experiential Learning

Our department’s experiential learning programs provide students with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the world outside the typical university setting.

  • Work side-by-side with faculty on a scholarly research project
  • Immerse yourself another culture through a study abroad program in Italy, Greece, Turkey or Israel
  • Perform summer archaeological work in the Americas, Europe, North Africa or the eastern Mediterranean region

Career-Focused

With a wide scope of study that includes historical, political, literary, artistic, sociological, philosophical and archaeological dimensions, classics students develop highly sought-after skills in the areas of research, critical thinking, communication and human relations. A degree or minor in classics provides an excellent basis for graduate school or careers in the arts, business, communications, public relations, publishing and social work.
