Jupiter String Quartet to conclude Slee/Beethoven String Quartet Cycle

The Jupiter String Quartet will perform the final three concerts of this year’s Slee/Beethoven String Quartet Cycle this weekend in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus.

Concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, and Saturday, April 9, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 10.

Members of the quartet also will conduct a master class — or public coaching session — at 11 a.m. Saturday in Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North campus. The class is free and open to the public.

The Jupiter String Quartet is a particularly intimate group, consisting of violinists Nelson Lee and Meg Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel (older sister of Meg) and cellist Daniel McDonough (husband of Meg, brother-in-law of Liz). As they enter their 14th year of making music together, the members of this tightly knit ensemble have firmly established the quartet as an important voice in the world of chamber music.

In addition to their performing career, the Jupiters are the string quartet-in-residence at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, where they maintain private studios and run the string chamber music program at the university.

The quartet also places a strong emphasis on developing relationships with future classical music audiences through outreach work in schools and other educational performances. Members believe the intensity of interplay and communication in chamber music make it one of the most effective ways of spreading an enthusiasm for “classical” music to new audiences.

Tickets for the Jupiter String Quartet’s UB concerts are $15 for general admission, $10 for UB faculty/staff/alumni, seniors and non-UB students, and free for UB students with valid ID.
