Thousands of students expected to move in and join events to mark the new school year

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Detergent. Check. Mini fridge. Check. Winter coat (You’ll need it eventually). Check.

Thousands of freshman and transfer students are descending upon the University at Buffalo today, the start of Opening Weekend. A slate of activities is planned to help them adjust to their new digs, as well as give their families ample opportunity to explore UB and spend time with their loved ones before classes start Monday.

Here is a partial list of events:

Thursday, Aug. 25

  • 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. — New students move into the following residence halls: Ellicott and Governors complexes on North Campus, Clement and Goodyear halls on South Campus.

Friday, Aug. 26

  • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. — New student move-in continues at the residence halls mentioned above.
  • 4 p.m. — Opening Weekend welcome and interlocking UB photo at the Student Union Field. More than 2,300 students wearing UB T-shirts will come together to form the university’s logo. President Satish K. Tripathi and other UB administrators will welcome students. Rain site is Alumni Arena.
  • 5-7 p.m. — A welcome picnic for new students at Baird Point. Rain site is the Student Union.

Saturday, Aug. 27

  • All day — UB Pride and Service Day. Students will volunteer in community service projects in Buffalo neighborhoods, and then board buses to spend the afternoon at Niagara Falls, the Elmwood Arts Festival and Canalside Buffalo.
  • 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. — The Late Night Welcome Back Bash, inside and outside the Student Union, featuring music, a paint war dance party, game shows, crafts, food and prizes.

Sunday, Aug. 28

  • 3-5 p.m. — A new event, Cyclovia, will take place outside the UB Bookstore. The cycling and street festival will spotlight student clubs and community organizations, and feature skating demonstrations, a BMX stunt show, yoga, street art and more.

The full schedule of events is available on the Opening Weekend website. The events are part of “Fall into UB,” a month-long, campus-wide series of activities that celebrate the new academic year.
