Info for Transfer Students

Welcome to UB! We are a dynamic, comprehensive department with an active research faculty dedicated to our students' success.  Here, you will encounter cutting-edge psychological science and conduct hands-on research in one of our many specialized labs. We hope to make the process of transferring to our university as easy as possible.

SUNY to SUNY Transfer Students

If you are joining us from another SUNY school, you can take advantage of the SUNY seamless transfer program. Find out which if your previous courses SUNY has defined as being directly transferrable from one component to another.

Non-SUNY Transfer Students

If you are transferring from a non-SUNY school, transfer courses must be comparable to UB courses. Courses taken in statistics and research methods, as well as upper-level psychology courses, must be evaluated and approved by the department. Students should consult with an academic advisor for questions regarding transfer of course credits.

Graduate Students

Q. I already have a master’s degree. What are my transfer options?
A. As all of our programs are research based (which includes working on research projects), having a master’s degree does not significantly decrease our PhD students’ time in our program. Note that transfer credit can only be reviewed after an applicant has been accepted and enrolled in the program and usually does not exceed six (6) credits.

Q. If I start in the master’s program, can I transfer to the PhD program later?
A. MA students who are interested in continuing in one of our PhD programs must apply to the PhD program in the same manner as applicants from other universities. Prospective students should not apply to the MA program under the assumption they will be automatically enrolled in the PhD program at a later date.
