Art History; Visual Studies
My work explores the politics of representation in art criticism during the late 20th century. In particular, I am interested in how struggles over the meaning of postmodernism during the late 1970s and early 1980s anticipate the culture wars of the coming decade. My current project examines how some art critics of the 1980s appropriated the tactics of recent conceptual art in their writings to reveal the ideological underpinnings of dominant art discourse.
I teach graduate and undergraduate classes on modern and contemporary art, criticism, critical theory, and visual culture.
