Artist Statement

Marguerite Kellam uses metal and fiber art to illustrate the strength required to be a woman. She learned fiber arts at a young age from her mother and was introduced to metalworking in college. Her work draws on the intrinsic strength of steel and the inherent softness of fiber to visualize women's issues and her own personal experiences with sex, marriage and divorce, women's health, and grief.  Her work aims to visualize the experience of being a woman and the process of healing that's required for a woman to recover from traumatic events that she has had to deal with in her life. Regardless of race, income, and geographic location, there are women who are trapped in marriages, shouldering most of the burden of caring for children while trying to pursue their dreams. The work is intended to highlight the inner strengths of women who fight to overcome similar struggles in their personal and public lives. Marguerite is currently an MFA student at University at Buffalo. She received her BFA from the University of Kentucky in 2018.
