In July of 2026, UB SLP students participated in our second high-fidelity medical simulation experience at the Behling Human Simulation Center through the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.
Designed by CDS faculty Kaila Stipancic and Molly Holcombe, this 3-hour simulation experience allowed students to perform a speaking valve assessment on an airway manikin, along with a bedside swallow evaluation and cognitive assessment with standardized patients. The experience took place in a simulated and highly realistic acute care environment, featuring actors portraying nurses and physicians.
Our department is proud of our students, who demonstrated exceptional preparation, professionalism, critical thinking and flexibility throughout this experience.
We are also grateful for the support of Jessica Huber and Laura E. Smith in making this experience possible, along with our faculty and PhD students who brought this experience to life: Katrina Fulcher-Rood, Erin Wilson, Nathaniel Cline, & Ellie Schieltz.
