Alumni Welcome

Thank you for supporting the Department of Earth Sciences

We are so grateful for the continued support of our alumni. Your generosity and engagement ensure that the next generation of geoscientists can thrive in a dynamic learning environment, equipped with the tools and opportunities to push the boundaries of Earth science.

Thanks to Martin Derby (see featured alumni profile) for this nostalgic photo of Field Camp 1983.  There were 14 students that year, compared to the 35-40 that is the typical enrollment of our current Field Camp.

Field Camp Update

Geological Field Camp students and staff, photo was taken at Bridges National Monument, Utah.

Field Camp continues to be a cornerstone of our program, and thanks to alumni donations, it’s safer and more impactful than ever.

Recent updates include:

  • Safety Upgrades: Thanks to the 2018 crowdfunding effort, we provided each student mapping team with quality radios, enhancing communication and safety in the field. These radios have allowed us to address minor injuries and navigate weather challenges effectively.
  • Essential Equipment: Additional Brunton compasses and other critical tools have been purchased, ensuring our students have access to the best resources.

Future Goals:
In 2019, we began raising funds for a seismometer to enhance geophysics field training. Although this initiative was paused, we are committed to restarting it when the time is right.

Adapting to Challenges:
In 2020, COVID-19 forced the cancellation of Field Camp for the first time in decades. In response, our faculty developed a virtual mapping course to ensure seniors could fulfill their graduation requirements. This innovative course will also provide new opportunities for students who cannot attend Field Camp in the future.
