June in Buffalo, UB’s annual, world-renowned new music festival and conference dedicated to emerging composers, will take place June 4-10 on the North Campus.

The week-long symposium, under the artistic direction of David Felder, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Birge-Cary chair of music composition, offers an intensive schedule of seminars, lectures, workshops, professional presentations, participant forums and open rehearsals for the accepted students, as well as afternoon and evening concerts open to the general public.

It is presented by the Department of Music and the Robert and Carol Morris Center for 21st Century Music.

Each year, the festival receives between 80 and 100 student applications from around the globe, but only about 25 are accepted into the program. All student participants have one work performed publicly during the week by musicians who have dedicated a significant portion of their musical careers to the presentation of very recent music.

Students also have an opportunity to meet and be mentored by the distinguished senior composers who attend the festival each year. In addition to Felder, this year’s senior composers are John Harbison, Louis Karchin, Hilda Paredes, Roger Reynolds and Hans Thomalla.

Some of the world’s most renowned ensembles will be performing at June in Buffalo, including the Mivos Quartet, Ensemble Mise-En, Ensemble SIGNAL and UB’s own Slee Sinfonietta.

Also performing will be violinist Irvine Arditti, a noted soloist and first violinist with the Arditti Quartet.

The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will close the festival on June 10, performing works by June in Buffalo distinguished senior composers John Harbison and David Felder.

A complete schedule of June in Buffalo performances is available on the Department of Music website.
