Grammy Award-winning pianist talks—and plays—jazz during latest installment of “Take 5”

George Caldwell, adjunct instructor of piano and director of UB’s jazz ensembles, discusses his life as a musician and reveals the song that he’s been turning to during the pandemic in the latest episode of “Take 5.”

As a member of the Count Basie Orchestra, Caldwell won a Grammy in 1997 for best large jazz ensemble album. He has also played with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, toured internationally and worked on Broadway.

During his chat with President Tripathi, Caldwell explains why he’s passionate about teaching UB students, and performs original music, as well as an excerpt of a beloved American standard.
