I wanted experience in research and needed a job! My friend shared an email with me that was sent to his department. Richard Marinos, former assistant professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, helped guide me on and to this opportunty.
I was a student assistant lab member in The Watershed Biogeochemistry Lab that looks at the flows of energy, carbon and nutrients structure the ecosystems that all life depends on. The lab aims to understand how humans are modifying these flows by following the movement of carbon, nitrogen and other elements through soils and the streams that drain them. I worked with live plants outdoors in the field and tested various soil samples for their composition of carbon and nitrogen.
It helped me form a deeper understanding of materials I’ve learned in my classes. Mass spectrometry (measuring molecules by their mass-to-charge ratio) was no longer just something I needed to know for an exam, but rather a part of my position!
I gained lots of experience and feel more prepared for graduate school. This position helped me gain confidence in a variety of scientific techniques.
I chose biology since I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the natural sciences. I transferred here from another college as I believed UB’s department for my major is superior. I love my department and the professors in it at UB! Additionally, I love the teaching philosophy that the professors adapt. I feel like I’m always given the materials I need to succeed.
I am a first-generation, queer student from a low income family. I want to help fight the climate crisis and defend our planet from needless exploitation.
I grew up in Buffalo, so this area will always be my home and being a UB student goes right along with that. I love the community and people here! Getting through college is so rewarding, no matter how difficult it is!
The advice I would give to a new UB student looking to do research is to just go for it and get involved! Don’t be afraid of your lack of experience. Professors want honest, passionate people assisting them!
