Music majors at UB can complement their undergraduate degree with certifications from the UB Graduate School Education that allow them to teach in New York State schools.

These programs lead to one of two certifications, an Initial Teacher Certificate or Professional Certification.

Interested students are encouraged to complete the Minor in Education while pursuing their undergraduate degree. Note: Students who wish to pursue a BA in Music must have applied music study added to their degree program in order to continue on to the EdM or Professional Certificate in Music Education.

Initial Certification Only

Students interested in obtaining the Initial Certification must complete a BA in Music followed by a one-year Initial Certification program that includes coursework and student teaching. Recommendation for the Initial Teacher Certificate is issued by the New York State Education Department. Within five years, students must complete an EdM in Music Education to be recommended for Professional Certification.

Initial and Professional Certification

Students interested in obtaining the Professional Certification must complete a BA in Music followed by a two-year EdM in Music Education that includes coursework and student teaching. Recommendation for the Professional Teacher Certificate is issued by the New York State Education Department
