The Department of Music at the University at Buffalo offers a wide variety of performing ensembles that foster collaboration, creativity and a love of music. Whether you're pursuing a music degree or just want to keep playing, there's a place for you here.

Open to all students

Student ensembles are open to all UB students—regardless of your major or musical background. Whether you're continuing a lifelong passion or just picking up an instrument again, you're welcome here. Visit individual ensemble pages for audition details, repertoire info and schedules.

  • Symphony Orchestra

    The Symphony Orchestra is UB’s flagship orchestral ensemble. Open to students, faculty and community musicians, this vibrant group performs major works spanning centuries and styles.
  • Choir
    7/7/25
    This premier choral ensemble features 30–60 singers with prior vocal experience. Students work on vocal technique, blend and advanced repertoire—often collaborating with the Symphony Orchestra for major concerts and tours.
  • Chamber Singers

    (MUS 341) An elite 8-voice ensemble for serious singers pursuing professional-level performance and individual vocal coaching. Members study advanced repertoire, receive individualized coaching and perform regularly.
  • Concert Band

    Open to musicians from any major, the Concert Band performs a diverse repertoire—classical to contemporary.
  • Jazz Ensembles

    This program offers multiple jazz ensembles for different levels and styles. Focus on performance, improvisation and classic/contemporary repertoire.
  • Percussion Ensemble

    Push the boundaries of rhythm, tone and technique in a group dedicated to both classic and experimental percussion repertoire.
  • Contemporary Ensemble

    For students interested in modern music, this ensemble focuses on works from the 20th and 21st centuries—ideal for those looking to challenge convention and explore new sounds.
  • Thunder of the East
    7/7/25
    Join UB’s Marching Band and get in on the action. High-energy performances, school spirit and a front-row seat at major campus events. (MUS 130/330)
  • Chamber Music
    7/10/25
    The chamber music program offers small-group musical experiences, guided by experienced faculty. Students perform in traditional formats—like string quartets—or explore world music, contemporary pieces and more.

Chamber Music labs include:

  • Open! String Ensemble: No audition required. This ensemble brings together bowed and plucked instruments, embracing both traditional and global string styles in an inclusive, collaborative environment.
  • Choro Ensemble: A deep dive into Brazil’s vibrant Choro tradition, blending Afro-Brazilian rhythms and European melodies. Perform works by iconic composers and modern innovators. 
  • Guitar Ensemble: A flexible group performing an eclectic repertoire with acoustic, classical, and electric guitars. Great for developing ensemble chops and stage confidence.
Practice Room Access

Slee Sinfonietta

The Slee Sinfonietta is our professional chamber orchestra in residence and the centerpiece of the Robert and Carol Morris Center for 21st Century Music. Founded in 1997 by composer David Felder, it’s where groundbreaking new music meets world-class artistry. Learn more about the Slee Sinfonietta.
