Noah Breuer is an American artist with personal ties to Austria and the Czech Republic. His grandparents lived in Vienna, while most of the family was settled in Bohemia. The family owned the company "Carl Breuer and Sons", which operated a textile factory in Dvůr Králové nad Labem. During World War II, the company was confiscated by the Nazis, and most of his Jewish family perished in the Holocaust.

In 2016, Breuer discovered the archive of a family business at the Textile Museum in Česká Skalica, which inspired him to create a series of printed artworks on textiles, paper and glass, in which historical motifs blend with contemporary design.

Breuer is currently applying for Austrian citizenship for himself and his two children. The title of the exhibition, “Return to Austria,” is a kind of aspirational leitmotif for him.

“I see this body of work as a reclamation project, in which I revive, reinterpret, and appropriate the designs of the defunct Breuer family business. The title of the exhibition is an acknowledgement of my own Austrian heritage and the fact that my source material comes from the archives of my ancestors’ textile factory. Bringing my new, interpretive artworks back to Europe is a way of repatriating these textile designs.” — Noah Breuer
