The field of “Expanded Painting” may be understood as a broad set of practices that engage the traditions and discourse of painting, while moving beyond them. This graduate + advanced undergraduate course will draw on examples from the 1960s to the present, including the following projects: Painting in Space; Conceptual Painting; Rules and Systems; Painting without Paint; and Collaboration. Students will study works by a range of related artists such as: Sam Gilliam, Sarah Sze, Glenn Ligon, Tiffany Chung, Charles Gaines, On Kawara, Mark Bradford, Wade Guyton, Gelitin and assume vivid astro focus. You will explore each “expanded painting” approach through assignments that are open-ended, encouraging you to develop your creative and critical voice. Graduate students are required to complete additional readings and museum/gallery visits, and give presentations to the class.
