2023-24 Asia Research Institute Undergraduate Fellows Program

Extended application deadline: Tuesday, June 20, 2023, 11:59 PM EDT

The Asia Research Institute (ARI)’s Undergraduate Research Fellows Program seeks to stimulate and support undergraduate students’ interest in exploring various topics about a particular Asian country, a region (e.g., East Asia and South Asia), or Asia in general. The Undergraduate Fellows Program welcomes any enrolled UB undergraduate student who is invested in the study of Asia, interested in cultivating the ARI Fellows community, and committed to becoming an active member of ARI. A few highlights of the fellowship include: gaining experience in conducting research on a particular country, a region, or Asia in general, participating in preparations for conferences (see below), and serving as liaisons between ARI and the campus community.

The program will be an academic year-long commitment. Please see below for more detailed information on the benefits and requirements of the ARI Undergraduate Research Fellows Program.

Undergraduate Fellows Program Benefits

  • Membership in a community of undergraduates committed to Asian Studies and recognition by the ARI community.
  • Invitation to special events and meetings with distinguished guests.
  • Eligible for receiving one academic credit per semester for successful completion.
  • Competitive advantages for ARI funding opportunities.
  • Opportunities to engage with UB faculty on research, academic writing, and career mentoring.
  • Present a paper in the annual Korean Studies Undergraduate Exchange Conference (March 2024), the Undergraduate Conference on South Asia (March-April 2024), New York Conference on Asian Studies (October 2024), and other opportunities.

Undergraduate Fellows Program Requirements

  • Fellows must attend 8-10 meetings a term and volunteer for at least two public ARI events per semester. Duties may include, but are not limited to, event organizing, event setup & takedown, ushering, photo-taking, and video recording.
  • A 15-page research paper on issues related to Asia presented at the Korean Studies Undergraduate Exchange Conference (March 2024), the Undergraduate Conference on South Asia (March-April 2024), the New York Conference on Asian Studies (October 2024), or other opportunities will be required. UB faculty will serve as faculty advisor for the research project. In addition, there may be shorter writing assignments in both terms.
  • Fellows must attend research meetings. (Combined with the other meetings required for the program, meetings will mostly occur on a weekly basis.)

If the fellow fails to abide by the conditions of the fellowship, ARI has the right to annul the fellowship.
