    The department hosted the 2026 Alison L. Des Forges International Symposium, "Peace and Justice in the Taiwan Strait," on April 16. The annual symposium explored the cultural, historical and political dynamics among the Republic of China, the People's Republic of China and the U.S, with a focus on sustaining peace and advancing human rights across the Taiwan Strait. The event honors the life and work of human rights activist Alison Des Forges (1942–2009).

The piece highlights how these colorful symbols of fan culture are now being wielded at demonstrations calling for the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
