An article in the Fresno Bee on Web sites that concentrate on snarky celebrity news quotes Elayne Rapping, professor emeritus of American studies, who said, "All of the people who are celebrity addicts and read all these magazines must go on these celebrity Web sites the way some people play video games for hours on end. I really think this country has become addicted to celebrity. In my opinion, in many ways, it's a way of avoiding the real news.
