The International Glaciological Society 2018 Symposium

Hotel at the Lafayette.

Date: June 3-8, 2018
Place: Hotel at the Lafayette, Buffalo, NY

  • On Monday, June 4 at 2:45 p.m., President-Elect of the American Geophysical Union Robin Bell will give a sustainability lecture sponsored by the UB College of Arts and Sciences. The title of her talk is, “Building an Ethical Sustainable Future: From the Poles to Our Homes.” While we prefer to talk about the beauty of ice, our community is grappling with the thorny issues brought forward by the #Metoo movement and climate change. Climate change is an “all hands on deck” moment that requires assembling all the talent we can.  Unethical behavior that has driven talent from our field and we must address it.  Simultaneously to be credible experts, scientists must reckon with their individual contributions to climate change.  The American Geophysical Union has moved in this direction by defining scientific misconduct to include bullying and harassing and by supporting a net-zero headquarters in Washington DC. Lively discussions on how to build an ethical, open sustainable future are essential from the icy poles to our homes.

  • On Monday, June 4 at 4 p.m., Shane Hanlon, producer for the science-focused podcast, “The Story Collider,” will lead a science communication workshop  that discusses compelling ways to share science, including through social media. “The Story Collider,” which is nationally known, is dedicated to true, personal stories about science. Scientists have many different options when thinking about ways to reach non-science audiences. As sharing science via social media becomes a staple mode of outreach, employees in scientific fields need to understand attractive and effective ways in which to connect with their audiences. In this (interactive!) presentation, attendees will learn how to use storytelling and social media in compelling and effective ways to communicate their science message; valuable skills, no matter the chosen profession. This workshop is being supported  from the College of Arts and Sciences. To RSVP, contact bac6@buffalo.edu by June 3 with your name, institutional affiliation and information on whether you are a student.
  • On Monday, June 4 at 5 p.m., a networking event and reception will be held for attendees of the IGS symposium, sustainability lecture and science communication workshop, including the opportunity to talk to the speakers.
