What sludge and lava have in common is that they are both a three-phase mixture of gas, liquid and solids,” says Kolzenburg. “Lava contains gases such as carbon dioxide and water-steam bubbles, liquid molten rock and solids in the form of crystals. Sludge also has gas, liquid and solids, but the materials that make up these phases are different.

UB researcher Stephan Kolzenburg is having a busy summer studying volcanoes around the world to deepen scientists’ understanding of lava flow.

University of Missouri-Kansas City, Dr. Alison Graettinger, Department of Geosciences and her students came to Center for Geological and Climate Hazards Field Station July 10 - July 14, 2023. 

On June 12 and 13 2023, the Center for Geological and Climate Hazards at UB hosted a Large scale lava experimentation workshop. Experts from across the globe gathered at UB both in person and virtually for a discussion and planning workshop aimed at creating a roadmap for the future of large-scale lava experiments.

The Tephra Data Systems 2023 Workshop was held June 7–11, 2023 at Playa at Summer Lake, Oregon, USA. Tephra plays a unique and critical role in dating earth events by providing widespread, precise time markers in the form of layers generated by explosive volcanic eruptions. 

Scientists have long struggled to find the best way to present crucial facts about future sea-level rise, but are getting better at communicating more clearly, according to an international group of climate scientists, including a leading UB expert.
