Undergraduate Student Profile: Hannah Baker

Headshot of Hannah Baker.

As a senior in the Global Gender and Sexuality Studies Department, I have found a passion for exploring the influences of gender and sex in society and discussing ways to address the need for change. GGSS is an exciting program with many unique opportunities. In every course, I have the privilege of connecting with professors and engaging in progressive dialogue.

Much of my interest in the field of women’s/gender studies stems from persisting inequalities and the control of basic human rights. Through an intersectional framework and gendered lens, I am specifically focused on the impacts of public policy on education, reproductive rights, and violence against women. After completion of this academic year, I am planning to pursue a doctorate in gender studies at UB with the intention of becoming involved in the public policy sector and teaching at a university.

As I continue my studies, I also remain committed to my extracurricular involvements. I am a LEAD peer mentor for UB’s Leadership House, a paraprofessional (CA) at UB, a College of Arts and Sciences sociology ambassador at UB, a teaching assistant for GGS199: Genesis and Gender, the assistant editor and intern for the Global Women’s Empowerment Magazine (GWEM), a gender-neutral advocate towards the City of Norwich “Men Working” signs, a substitute teacher for Norwich City School District and Oxford Academy Central School District and a Catholic Charities volunteer. The GGS program provides an open space where diversity and questioning are accepted. As a result, I have learned eye-opening information which has transformed the way I view aspects of society in my everyday life and I am more confident in standing up for what I believe in. My experience has been life-changing thus far, and I am honored to be a student in the GGS Department.
