Directed by Professor George Caldwell, the UB Jazz Ensemble program provides an engaging platform for students passionate about jazz performance and improvisation. The program includes two sub-ensembles tailored to different musical interests and skill levels.

Big Band

  • A larger ensemble focused on classic and contemporary big band repertoire.

Jazz Combo

  • Smaller groups of 4–6 performers.
  • Perfect for exploring intimate jazz settings and developing improvisational expertise.

Rehearsal Schedules:

Determined each semester based on ensemble composition and student availability.

Performances:

Auditions

Auditions are held at the start of each semester in 314 Baird Hall.

Audition Requirements:

  • Prepare two songs from the American Songbook (e.g., works by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker).
  • Sight-reading is included in the audition process.

Students must register for the appropriate course to participate:

Big Band

  • Undergraduate: MUS 356 (2 credits)
  • Graduate: MUS 556 (2 credits)
  • Non-Major: MUS 156 MFC (2 credits)

Jazz Combo

  • Undergraduate: MUS 357 (2 credits)
  • Graduate: MUS 557 (2 credits)
  • Non-Major: MUS 157 MFC (2 credits)
