Stephen Guerra featured in Buffalo Spree for his work with Brazilian choro
Stephen Guerra, assistant professor in the UB Department of Music, is featured in "Buffalo Spree" for his work as a guitarist, composer and teacher and for his efforts to grow Buffalo’s choro community.
The article, “Stephen Guerra and the Love of Choro,” explores Guerra’s path to music, his years studying the Brazilian genre and the way those experiences now shape his teaching and creative work at UB. Choro blends European musical traditions with African rhythms and places a strong emphasis on improvisation, collaboration and musical exchange.
Guerra brings that spirit into the Buffalo community through a weekly choro session at Caffe Aroma, where musicians gather to play together in an informal setting. He told Buffalo Spree that his goal is to encourage people to make music together rather than simply consume it.
The feature also highlights Guerra’s latest recording, Um Violão na Cidade Maravilhosa, which includes 10 original choro compositions and reflects the musical relationships he has built through years of study and collaboration in Brazil.
