The University at Buffalo Department of Music welcomes transfer students from across the globe, offering competitive music major programs and versatile minors to complement other fields of study. Below is key information to guide you through the transfer process.

General Process

  1. Apply to UB
    • Spring Enrollment Deadline: December 1
    • Fall Enrollment Deadline: May 1
    • Visit the UB Office of Admissions for detailed information about transfer requirements and processes.
  2. Submit a Department of Music Application

Transfer Credit Policies

Maximum Credits Accepted:

  • BA in Music: Up to 24 music credits.
  • MusB in Music Performance: Up to 45 music credits.

Credit Breakdown:
Transfer credits may fulfill up to 50% of required credits in:

  • Music history
  • Music theory
  • Applied lessons
  • Ensemble participation

Grade Requirement:

  •  Courses must have a minimum grade of C to be eligible for credit transfer.

Placement Exams:

  • Transfer credits in music theory or history may require passing a placement exam for approval.

  •  Course syllabi and any relevant materials for music theory, history, ensembles and applied lesson courses.
