PhD Student James Falzone Wins Fulbright to Study Composition in Austria

James Falzone, a doctoral student in music composition in the Department of Music, has been awarded a Fulbright research grant to study in Austria during the upcoming academic year.

Falzone’s project, titled "Composition for Organ in an Ensemble Context with Study of Tuning and Temperament," explores new possibilities for organ composition within group performance, focusing on how tuning systems shape musical experience.

Thanks to the Fulbright, Falzone will study under Klaus Lang, a renowned Austrian composer and organist whose music first inspired him years ago. “His work moved me deeply,” Falzone said. The award will allow him to deepen that connection through sustained study and collaboration in Austria.

Falzone is one of six UB students to earn a Fulbright this year, part of a proud university tradition of global scholarship and engagement. He plans to pursue a career in academia after completing his Fulbright year.
