Professor Sungmin Shin featured in Buffalo Spree for work in performance and community music

Professor Sungmin Shin, associate professor of practice in guitar performance, is featured in "Buffalo Spree" for his work as a performer teacher and community leader.

The article, “The joy of guitar,” traces Shin’s path from early musical inspiration to an international career in performance and teaching. At UB, he works with students across all levels, from majors to non majors, and leads large ensemble performances including a guitar orchestra.

Shin’s impact extends beyond campus through his role as artistic director of the Buffalo International Guitar Festival and co founder of Guitar Reach Buffalo. These efforts focus on building access to music education and creating opportunities for students and the wider community.

His recent creative work, including original compositions and performances, reflects a wide range of musical influences and a commitment to connecting people through music.

Sungmin Shin is holding two guitars. In his left hand, he holds the neck of an electric guitar with a natural wood-grain body and visible pickups. Across his lap, he holds an acoustic guitar with a light wood finish, resting his right hand near the strings and his left hand on the fretboard. A black guitar strap runs over his shoulder. He faces the camera directly with a relaxed, friendly expression.
