Program Overview

Take your learning beyond the classroom

Philosophy, Politics and Economics at UB is not just something you study. It is something you do. Through hands-on projects, research and community partnerships, PPE connects ideas to real-world impact in Buffalo and beyond. Whether you are working with local organizations, contributing to research or building solutions to social challenges, these experiences help you apply what you learn in meaningful ways.

Learning in action

PPE programs are designed to connect theory with practice. You will have opportunities to:

  • work on real-world challenges alongside classmates
  • collaborate with faculty on research and applied projects
  • engage with community partners across Buffalo
  • explore how ideas shape action in real settings

These experiences build confidence, strengthen your skills and prepare you for what comes next.

Our projects

  • PPE Capstone Projects
    3/24/26
As part of the program, all PPE students are required to take a project-based capstone course that has them confront complex social issues while achieving concrete social impact.
  • Diversity, Dynamism & Inclusion Project
    4/23/26
This research project explores how societies can better respond to change, disagreement and new ideas. Funded by the Templeton Foundation and led by core PPE Faculty Ryan Muldoon, the project looks at how open societies use a range of perspectives and experiences to improve decision-making and adapt over time.
  • Inclusive Immigration and Democratic Revival in a Rust Belt City
    4/23/26
This research project explores how immigration shapes the future of cities like Buffalo. Funded by the Mellon Foundation and lead by core PPE faculty Alex Oprea, the project looks at how new residents contribute to civic life, community growth and democratic renewal.
