Bio:
Sirat is a first-year doctoral candidate and teaching assistant at the Department of Sociology. Her research is focused on race and ethnicity, immigration, law and society, political sociology, cultural sociology, and issues of stratification and inequality. After graduating from her masters program, she worked as a community organizer at the South Asian Network in Los Angeles, where she engaged in policy, research, and grassroots mobilization for South Asians in Southern California. She recognized significant gaps in sociological literature regarding South Asians, particularly in voter databases, hate crime statistics, immigration issues, racism and discrimination, and social and economic representation. She aims to address their underrepresentation in broader Asian studies and explore areas like cultural identity, religion, gender norms, and political representation. In her PhD, she plans to utilize sociological theories from W.E.B. Du Bois and Marx, combined with quantitative methods, to emower marginalized groups and advocate for more comprehensive data in the sociological and policy literature
